Each year, the Ithaca College chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi invites outstanding seniors to apply for selection as the chapter’s candidate for one of the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowships for the first year of graduate or professional study. This year the IC chapter of Phi Kappa Phi received many outstanding applications for consideration.
The selected application was submitted by Katharine Ahrens, a senior Mathematics and English major (Music Minor) in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Ithaca College, who plans to continue study at North Carolina State in the Fall 2015.
While at Ithaca College, Katie has authored articles featured in Zoetic & Gilbert, as well as co-authored an article published in the International Journal of Mathematics Education Science and Technology. She has also presented research at the James J. Whalen Symposium, the Seaway Mathematics Meeting and at the National Conference of Undergraduate Women in Mathematics. Katie is a member of several honor societies and was chosen as the 2014 Ithaca College C.P. Snow Scholar.
Phi Kappa Phi national winners of the fellowships will be announced by June 1, 2015. We wish Katie all the best as her application goes forward for consideration at the national level.
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local members to compete for the Society-wide awards.
Criteria used in the selection process include undergraduate academics, leadership and service both on the campus and in the community, graduate prospects, the student’s personal statement, and faculty and other recommendations.
Ithaca College has been fortunate to have an excellent track record in having fellowships awarded to its nominee. Recent Ithaca College winners of Fellowships are: Ann Stewart (Music and Mathematics, 1994), Pablo Cora (Music, 1995), Teresa Lemery (Physical Therapy, 1997), Dheeraj Verma (Mathematics and Finance, 1999), Bridget Reynolds (Psychology, 2002) Rebecca Hammontree (Music, 2004), Dominic DiOrio (Music, 2006), Joseph Livingston (Chemistry, 2007), Kaitlyn Alcorn (Music, 2010), Kaylee Underkofler (Biochemistry, 2012) and Andrew Becker (Biochemistry, 2014).

Its chapters are on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Each year, approximately 30,000 members are initiated.
