Dr. Orlando-Marquez C. Kittrell, director of the Ithaca College program Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (C-STEM) and the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), presented “Eureka: Making Connections for the New STEM Elite with Education for a Global Leadership” during the Inaugural NCORE Poster Session on May 28th.

Dr. Kittrell’s presentation explored the development of strategically planned support services for connecting with historically underrepresented college students completing undergraduate programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at Ithaca College.  Through both C-STEM and HEOP programs, students receive intrusive counseling, mentoring, and coaching.

The success of C-STEM and HEOP are based on origins and rich histories within the New York State Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Access, Support and Success.  The session was of particular benefit to college staff, faculty and administrators in key or leadership positions who are interested in knowing how in combination C-STEM and HEOP have successfully met the national challenge, set forth by the Obama Administration, of preparing Hispanics, African-Americans, and other underrepresented groups in their pursuits of professional licensure and careers in mathematics, science, technology and health-related fields.
