Like music? Like musicians? You'll love Quartet.
Ithaca College Theatre Arts faculty Susannah Berryman, Greg Bostwick and Judith Levitt will play three of the four retired musicians featured in a reading of Ronald Harwood's play Quartet (on which the movie was based) . The fourth will be played by Ithaca College alumnus, playwright and actor Arthur Bicknell.
As Beecham House prepares to celebrate the birthday of Giuseppe Verdi with an annual gala, residents Wilfrid Bond, Reginald Paget and Cissy Robson ponder what their contribution might be. They are unexpectedly joined at Beecham House by Jean Horton, a talented and temperamental soprano, who was briefly married to Reginald. After an awkward period of adjustment, the idea emerges that the four singers might reprise the roles they played in a landmark production of Rigoletto many years earlier and sing the famous Act III quartet Bella figlia dell'amore. Jean refuses adamantly for reasons that are finally revealed after much prodding. The play, rich in humor and insight into human nature and the artistic temperament, resolves in a delightful and unexpected finale.
