Ithaca College has had a very successful programmatic partnership with Longview, a retirement community located on Danby Road, for the past 16 years. There are a number of opportunities for members of the Ithaca College Community to become involved at Longview.
Course Related Projects at Longview
Faculty members can involve their students at Longview through course related, and/or service learning projects. Intergenerational discussion groups, tours of Longview, recreational and social activities planned by students, and student presentations or performances held at Longview are all possibilities. Chris Pogorzala will work with faculty and students to identify options and to facilitate scheduling, promotion of programs, and recruitment of Longview participants. To initiate a request to conduct an activity at Longview, please fill out the online form at: https://www.ithaca.edu/gerontology/longview/activityform/
The Longview/Ithaca College Shuttle
On days that classes are in session there is a shuttle that provides transportation between Longview and the College in the morning, with stops at the Center for Health Sciences and Textor. This shuttle is available to members of both the Longview and Ithaca College Communities. The shuttle schedule for Fall 2015 is posted on the Gerontology Institute website at: https://www.ithaca.edu/aging/longview/. Please be aware that the ‘no stop’ notations on the schedule are generally used to expedite the transportation of Longview resident ‘students’ to classes they are taking in buildings that are not on the regular shuttle route.
There are sometimes slight changes made to this schedule to accommodate for course related activities that require the transport of students to Longview. Any significant changes made to the existing schedule will be posted to Intercom. If the shuttle is canceled due to bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, a notice will be posted on the Gerontology Institute web address listed above.
The Ithaca College Faculty & Staff Lecture Series at Longview
Another feature of the partnership between IC and Longview is an ongoing Faculty & Staff Lecture Series. While all of the Fall 2015 semester speaking dates have already been filled (!!!), volunteers will be needed for the Spring 2016 semester. Presentations, which can include: academic topics; music or theatre performances; current events; and areas of personal interest, such as sports, hobbies, or travel experiences, are generally scheduled on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:00 PM in the Longview auditorium. An appreciative audience is guaranteed! Contact Chris Pogorzala, the IC/LV Coordinator, if you would like more information, or would be interested in giving a presentation at Longview during the Spring 2016 semester.
