We can help!  Throughout September, the Academic Advising Center will be providing workshops to address some common challenges faced by first-year college students.  In these workshops, you will learn strategies and skills to prepare you for academic success.

How do you learn best? Discovering V.A.R.K. and more
Discover how to make your study sessions more successful by understanding the strategies most suitable for you. This workshop will help identify your learning styles leading to an in-depth examination of study strategies that connect closely to the ways you best acquire knowledge.  These strategies are the tools you can employ to assist in the learning process, enabling you to better foster academic success.

Budgeting your time:  Learn the ins and outs of how to budget your time to make the most of your education at Ithaca College

Making the transition to college can be challenging when determining how best to use your time.  In this session, you will learn what to include in your time management plan and how to make the most of your free time.  You will also learn how to plan your studies, how to be involved on campus, all the while still sticking to your time budget.

The differences between studying and learning: Finding the necessary balance to succeed

Have you ever heard a friend say “I studied but I didn’t learn anything!”  The reason for this may be that while some view the two terms synonymously, they are in fact very different concepts.  This session will not only discuss those dissimilarities, but provide insight into how a comprehensive understanding of these terms can help promote student success in college.

I have to read how many pages? Effective strategies for college level reading

The amount of reading you may be required to do in your courses can sometimes be overwhelming.  This session will provide techniques and strategies for helping you to manage reading assignments at the college level.  Focus will be on intentional reading and tips for retaining information so that you are better prepared for class discussions and exams.

This isn’t high school anymore: Study strategies and tips for college success

In this session, students will learn effective strategies for success in the college classroom – and how they may differ from those you used in high school. Learn study tips, note-taking and test preparation strategies as well in this workshop aimed to ease your transition to college.

Planning and prioritizing: How not to procrastinate in college

This workshop will address the most common types of procrastination as well as both the pitfalls and benefits (yes, benefits!) of each. Assess your own level of procrastination, and learn strategies to help you deal more effectively with procrastinating behaviors in college.
