Gorge Safety Reminder

Ithaca is well known for the beauty of its gorges—a main attraction in the region and a must see for members of our campus community. Perhaps less known is the potential for danger and the fact that it is illegal to swim in these gorges. Over the past two decades, there have been over 25 accidental deaths and numerous serious injuries suffered by people swimming and jumping into the gorges.

Even the best swimmers risk being pulled underwater and drowned by an unseen current. Others who pursue the thrill of the jump or dive risk slipping, falling, and landing wrong on the water or onto hidden rocks.  Remember also that your actions can put others in harm’s way. Attempting to rescue a friend in danger exposes that individual to the risk of drowning or injury as well.  Emergency responders—including police, firefighters, and ambulance personnel—risk their own safety when attempting to rescue those who ignore the dangers of swimming and jumping in gorges.

While there are no gorges situated immediately on the Ithaca College campus, the IC Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management would like to use this opportunity to caution all community members about the hazards and risks, and encourage responsible alternatives such as walking and hiking on the numerous designated trails that surround the area's gorges.
