Theft/Burglary Prevention Tips

Due to several recently reported incidences of theft and burglary on campus, the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management would like to provide some anti-theft tips to the campus community.  Theft is the most common crime on campus, from offices to residence halls to public spaces.  However, a few quick and important measures can help you protect your space and property. 

• Lock your door when you leave!  Lock up and take keys with you, no matter how briefly you think you’ll be gone. 

• Do not leave notes stating that you are gone or specifying when you will return.  This creates a clear window in which to target your office or residence.

• Do not prop open locked exit doors or damage card access systems.  These doors are locked for the security of you and your property.

• Do not allow strangers to enter your room or workspace unless they have properly identified themselves.

• Solicitation is not allowed without a permit, and no door-to-door solicitation is permitted at all on campus.  Solicitors may also be gaining information about property to steal and vulnerable people or locations.  Please report such behavior if you see it.

• Keep valuable items out of sight when not in use.  Locking away such items is even better.  Items to consider can include your wallet , purse, laptop,  tablet, phone, musical instruments, and more.

• Keep a record of all your valuables.  Descriptions, serial numbers, and    photos can all be critical in the recovery of stolen property.
