"How have the effects of colonialism influenced our lives today? What is the distinction between Hispanic and Latino/a? Since those terms refer to cultural heritage, what race do Latino individuals identify with? How does white privilege, machismo, and cisgender privilege shape identity?"- Kat Lazo, Expanding the Conversation Within
Poder, a student organization dedicated to the fostering and promotion of diversity and awareness of Hispanic/Latino culture on campus, invited a dynamic voice of social justice to let the "Kat out of the bag." Kat Lazo facilitated a dialogue about Latina/o identity and invited attendees to reimagine how we choose to identify and view ethnicity vs. race. Students were well invested in conversations about male privilege, colonialism, colorism, heteronormative culture. Personal experiences and realities were shared in this safe and brave space to encourage learning and growth. All attendees were able to walk away with new knowledge and embrace a spirit of empowerment to stand out and speak up.
