Fall 2015 Environmental Seminar/Sustainability Café Features Daniel Lezcano Arguella, Organic Shade-Grown Coffee Grower from Costa Rica’s Altamira Region Monday 28 September

09/24/15

Contributed by Carol Hansen

Daniel Lezcano Arguella grows organic shade grown coffee on lands immediately adjacent to Amistad International Park, an area that holds 2-1/2 per cent of the world’s biodiversity. Organic bananas provide the shade for his coffee plants, creating a polyculture which supplies the ASPROLA community organization, who then process the coffee and bananas, and make yoghurts and jams and run an ecotourism operation as well. Daniel will speak about the process of producing organic coffee in contrast to non-organic coffee, and will provide a taste comparison. Come try some of his coffee!

The ENVS seminar series addresses global environmental issues and how we can effect broader environmental change to protect resources. The seminar meets from 4 to 5 pm in CNS 112. All members of the IC community are welcome to attend. Meet/greet the week’s seminar speaker over sustainable snacks provided by Sodexo at 3:45!

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Carol Hansen at chansen@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-1822. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
