The Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Michael Taylor for presenting and working with OSEMA to plan events for the month. We would also like to thank our entire committee including IC students Zihui Adams, Victor Lopez-Carmen, and faculty members Dr. Brooke Hansen, and Dr. Jack Rossen
Ithaca College kicked off Native American Month by exploring the visibility and cultural appropriation of Native culture in the industry of sports. Wednesday, November 4, Dr. Michael Taylor presented a powerful and dynamic session titled "Not Your (Great White) Father's Mascots: The Rising Visibility of Native American Athletes." Dr. Taylor is an Assistant Professor in the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity (CSCRE).
Attendees had the opportunity to explore the true meaning of the language and terms often used like “Indian”, identify the differences in professional and college sports and their choices to engage in the creation of hostile environments for Native athletes, and investigate the concept of the “Ethnographic Photo.”
