Savoyards Musical Theatre seeks a baritone to play Florian in its January 10, 2016 production of Princess Ida at the Endicott Performing Arts Center. This role's vocal range is Ab2 to F4.
Wonderful Role
In this version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera (set in Buffalo, New York in 1865), Florian is the assistant foreman at the Hildebrand Steel Factory and the older and wiser of the lead tenor’s two sidekicks. This comic trio are the male stars of Princess Ida. They infiltrate a women’s college disguised as girls and sing the opera’s funniest and most beautiful numbers: “Gently, Gently,” “I am a Maiden,” “The World is But a Broken Toy,” and “A Woman of the Wisest Wit.”
Besides a fine voice, this part requires good acting. A second-generation, working-class German American, Florian is loyal to his employer, devoted to his friends, and proud of his immigrant community. Significantly, he is the only one of the three friends to have served in the Civil War. Florian dreams of running the steel plant one day and of turning Buffalo into Upstate New York’s most prosperous city. His disciplined, no-nonsense air, however, conceals a bluff sense of humor and a randy sexuality.
Minimum Commitment
Time commitment is minimum. The singer would learn the music, lines, and blocking on his own, using a score, script, and DVD. Four mandatory rehearsals will occur between January 2 and 9, 2016, including a dress rehearsal at EPAC. The performance is Sunday, January 10.
