Every student at Ithaca College has benefited from the services offered by the Student Government Association. Whether it’s educating its campus about the importance of voting, placing students on staff-run college wide committees, or assisting with important causes, SGA utilizes many “under-the-radar” strategies to serve as the bridge between the Ithaca College administration and the IC student body.
The Student Government Association is one of four elements of the shared governance of Ithaca College, along with the administration, faculty council, and staff council. And although SGA is recognized as an OSEMA student organization, the group is self-governing as well. SGA’s executive board consists of student body president Dominick Recckio, four vice presidents running departments such as academic affairs and communications, a Senate Chair, and a Chief of Staff.
Recckio said of his experience at the head of the e-board and SGA's role as a governing body, “we’re fighting not only for shared but equitable governance [for the school].”
In the future, SGA seeks to break out into the forefront of reform efforts and civic engagement. One big step the student organization took towards achieving that goal was the role it took in the heavily attended meeting that took place in the A& Center regarding community action on racism and culture bias in the IC community. The executive board was surprised but motivated by the strong response they received after the event. “I can’t believe it took something this big for us to be involved,” Recckio said. “Now we’d like to use this spotlight to get more opportunities for representing and serving the student body.” SGA's next goal is to pass bills to formalize their roles in existing committees such as the CORE emergency response team.
