Assistant Professor Doug Turnbull and Luke Waldner ’17 were awarded an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Research Grant to support the MegsRadio project. MegsRadio is a locally-focused personalized Internet radio service that is currently being developed by a team of computer science and emerging media students at Ithaca College.

MegsRadio allows users to create customizable streams of music based on seed artists and tags (genres, emotions, instruments). However, our radio player is different from existing commercial systems in three ways. First, MegsRadio focuses on promoting the music of local Ithaca-area artists. Additionally, we provide a number of novel interactive features that give users much more control over their listening experience. Finally, MegsRadio is designed to be a shared academic test bed for exploring novel music recommendation and playlist generation algorithms.

The AWS grant will provide resources for 2 years of web hosting and music streaming. We plan to launch brand new iOS and web apps this coming spring. Stay tuned.
