COURSE CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Study of human development from infancy through adolescence, including cognitive and behavioral approaches to learning and fostering motivation in the context of school and other instructional situations. Attention given to the empirical attitude in relating theory and practice in various educational settings. Course Goals and Purpose: Through lectures, hands-on activities, and discussions, this course focuses on basic research methods, the theory and application of behavioral, social and cognitive approaches to learning and fostering motivation in educational settings as well as the discussion of current issues in education. The purposes of this course are to help you understand and translate psychological principles into practice and to provide you with the competencies required for teacher accreditation. Course Objectives: Students will… engage in a self-study to foster necessary skills for critically reflective practitioners; discuss and engage in activities that emphasize how theory and research can benefit practitioners who are responsible for the wellbeing of children; discuss and engage in activities that demonstrate the nature of motivation and instructional implications; describe and illustrate selected issues in child development and their relationship to children's behavior and learning in educational settings; critically reflect on race, power, privilege, and oppression in the larger society and it’s relationship to teaching, learning, classrooms, and school communities; evaluate the appropriateness of classroom management, instructional practices, and curricula related to children's physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development; experience a day in an elementary school for authentic observations and relationship building!!!
