2016 MLK Celebration

Every January, the Ithaca College community celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a series of programs sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement & Multicultural Affairs.

IC continue this tradition January 25-30, 2016, as students, staff, faculty, and community members come together to discuss the legacy and work of Dr. King. Our theme is "Conscience Asks the Question." The cynosure of the MLK 2016 Celebration is to focus on what motivates us to be active in the movement for social justice; how to motivate others to participate; and on how we can be better activists, advocates, and allies.

Monday, January 25, 4:00pm, Emerson Suites- MLK Celebration Event:

• The first-year students of the Ithaca College MLK Scholar Program will provide a presentation that highlights their journey on the Civil Rights Tour during Fall Break 2015.  Through performance and the use of multimedia, the Scholars will reflect on experiences and knowledge gained through their travels to parts of Georgia and Alabama. This is a presentation you do not want to miss!
• 2016 MLK Keynote Speaker immediately following the MLK Scholar Presentation.

Monday, January 25, 7:30pm, Ford Hall, Whalen Center- School of Music Annual MLK Celebration Concert

Tuesday, January 26, AND Thursday, January 28, 12pm- 1pm, and 7pm-8pm, Clark and Kling Lounge- Educational Workshops

• Faculty, staff, and students lead the campus community in presentations and dialogues that explore a variety of topics and subjects rooted in social justice and the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Concurrent sessions will be held during the indicated times. Specific session details will be available in January before the celebration begins.

Wednesday, January 27, 7pm, Emerson Suites- Film Screening and Discussion

• MTV’s “White People”- What does it mean to be white? MTV’s ‘White People’ is a controversial documentary on race that aims to answer that question from the viewpoint of young white people living in America today. The film follows Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and filmmaker, Jose Antonio Vargas, as he travels across the country to get this complicated conversation started. ‘White People’ asks what’s fair when it comes to affirmative action, if colorblindness is a good thing, what privilege really means, and what it’s like to become the “white minority” in your neighborhood. 

  There will be a facilitated discussion immediately following the film.

Saturday, January 30, 9am-4pm- Day of Service

• "Everybody can be great because everybody can serve." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  One of Dr. King's greatest visions was a world with communities working together to address their challenges. MLK Day of Service is an opportunity for students in the IC community to perform service at organizations and agencies in the Greater Ithaca area. It is our time to remember that we have a responsibility to provide for our local community.
