JWST 29400 (offered Tuesday/Thursdays 2:35-3:50) asks big questions about Jewish identity in the world today.
What does it mean to be Jewish today? Are Jews a race, a religion, an ethnicity, or something else? Where do Jews belong in the American racial system? How has hatred of Jews affected Jewish identity? Is there a special way of being a Jewish man or woman? How do transgender Jews experience their Judaism? Is Israeli Jewish identity different from American Jewish identity?
The course engages with contemporary Jewish identity by focusing on these four topics:
