What is a Peer Leader?
A Peer Leader is a current Ithaca College student who acts as a peer assistant in the Ithaca College Seminar. She/he exemplifies leadership both on and off campus acting as a mentor to first-year students. As members of the student body, Peer Leaders offer a perspective that is relatable and inviting to new students.
What are the position’s responsibilities?
In this mentoring role, an effective Peer Leader…
- Initiates and maintains regular contact with students in their ICSM 105/108 section throughout the semester in order to develop positive relationships.
- Facilitates discussions and/or presentations regarding pertinent student issues (i.e. time management, study skills, stress management)
- Uses a variety of communication methods to engage first-year students, both in and out of the classroom.
- Informs and updates the ICSM 105/108 and ICSM 300 instructors of any student concerns.
- Encourages student use of campus resources.
- Promotes and demonstrates respect for all students, inclusive of race, age, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ability, etc.
- Attends and participates in ICSM 300.
What are the expectations of a Peer Leader?
- Enroll in ICSM 300: Principles of Peer Mentoring and Leadership in the ICSM Program.
- Attend ICSM 105/108 common hours
- You will be matched with an ICSM instructor whom you will work with throughout the semester
- You are expected to contact your ICSM instructor before the semester begins to discuss concrete ways that you can be involved in the common hours
- You are expected to meet weekly with your ICSM instructor
- Present the student perspective on topics covered in the common hours of ICSM 105/108.
- Serve as a liaison for class members who have questions that they are not comfortable asking a faculty member.
- Act as a student resource, helping students make connections on campus (clubs/organizations, intramurals, events, etc).
- Aid with the understanding of liberal learning and place value on academic skills.
- Discuss your real-life experiences.
- Function as a positive role model at all times, including activities/events on College property and in the local community.
- Accept challenges of personal growth and utilize feedback to improve performance.
- Follow the policies and regulations regarding student behavior as outlined in the Ithaca College Student Handbook (https://www.ithaca.edu/sacl/handbook/)
