Screening of the documentary "The Battle of the Invisibles" and Q/A with director on Wed. March 2

The Committee on U.S.-Latin American Relations (CUSLAR), the Latin American Studies Program, and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures will host a screening of the documentary "The Battle of the Invisibles" as well as a Q&A with director Manuel de Alba next Wednesday, March 2 at 4pm in Textor 101.

Film Description, “The Battle of the Invisibles” (2010)

“The Battle of the Invisibles: Undocumented Workers vs Supermarkets” is a 60-minute documentary film that focuses on the janitorial labor force from Puebla, Mexico and the exploitation of their labor by major U.S. supermarkets. It also tells the story of how thousands of workers from a rural town in Mexico became employed by California's grocery stores and engaged in a five-year struggle against labor abuses by powerful supermarket chains including Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons.

Manuel de Alba is a documentary and short film producer and director. He earned his M.A. in Film at Columbia University. Before creating his own films, de Alba worked extensively in directing and producing film, in addition to script writing, radio producing, and film critique. His documentary, “The Battle of the Invisibles,” took first prize at the Santiago Alvarez in memoriam International Film Festival in Cuba, First Prize in Festival Internacional de la Imagen (2012), and Best Documentary at the Puebla International Film Festival (2012). His other works include the documentary “Y los niños de la calle siguen ahí” (And the street children are still there), “Niños de la calle de Irapuato, Gto.” (Street children in a central Mexico city), and a short fiction film entitled “End of the Game.” Manuel de Alba is currently producing and directing the documentary “Soldiers for the Empire.” He is also a full-time film professor at the Universidad de las Américas-Puebla and a current Fulbright scholar at the University of Scranton.
