The Center for the Study of Culture Race and Ethnicity presents a four-part 101 series designed to introduce participants to key concepts and conversations about race and racism. The second presentation, How to talk about Race 101, will be held on Tuesday, March 22nd from 12-1 PM in the Ithaca Falls room, Campus Center. Students, staff and faculty are all welcome to attend.

In the second of a four-part workshop series on race & ethnicity in America, Dr. Belisa Gonzalez and Dr. Phuong Nguyen will facilitate a discussion on how to talk about race, ethnicity and racism. This is a topic that can trip up the most well-intentioned of individuals, from colleagues and friends to presidential candidates. We fear that our choice of words or line of questioning could send the “wrong message.” While it is safer for some of us as individuals to not talk about race at all, it comes at a great cost to society. Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Nguyen, with their expertise in Sociology and Ethnic Studies respectively, will approach this topic from the perspective of well-intentioned individuals who worry about the words and terms we should use, why we use some over others, and how all parties can approach conversations about race in a way that acknowledges that we are all starting from different places.

Topics, dates and times of future presentations:
