STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF, AND LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS, please join us for an educational tour of two of our exemplary community-based learning initiatives. As you will discover, it is on the bridge between service-learning coursework, co-curricular programming, and community partnerships, where we meet for a deeper understanding of community need and collective action.
THIS EVENT FEATURES:
Sponsored by The Office of Civic Engagement and The Center for Faculty Excellence
THE MUSIC AS MEDICINE PROJECT
An emerging initiative sponsored by the School of Music, Gerontology, and Recreation & Leisure Studies, The Music as Medicine Project has seen notable growth in service-learning coursework, community partner outreach, and student organization development over the past academic year. At the heart of this project is the power of live performance and technology in support of better coping and communication skills for aging patients suffering from illnesses like dementia. This event will highlight several service-learning courses and community partners affiliated with the project, the national Music & Memory Program, and a clip from the documentary Alive Inside. Join us for live meditative performances and a dialogue about the healing power of music and the sustaining nature of musical memory.
THE VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) PROGRAM
An established program, VITA has been affiliated with Ithaca College for fifteen years! Service-Learning coursework and outreach during tax time is sponsored by the School of Business, in partnership with Alternatives Federal Credit Union. As a part of their service, students from Accounting and other majors help prepare tax returns for local community members in various sites throughout the region. Some students in this program also travel to Alaska to prepare tax returns for members of native tribes. Come learn about this engaging program—and just in time for the tax deadline!
