Ben Strauss (IC '08)will be discussing his and Joe Nocera's recent book, Indentured: The Rebellion Against the College Sports Cartel Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm in Hill 104 and again at 10:50 am in Textor 101.
Nocera and Strauss' examination of the economic monopoly that is the NCAA, particularly the College Football Championship and the "March Madness" basketball tournaments, asks the question, are Division I college athletes workers and thus entitled to salaries? Given the enormous amount of money generated by these tournaments, the salaries of coaches, and the revenues for the athletic departments, do not the workers (student athletes) who produce the events (games) deserve their fair share? Unraveling the very complicated finances of college sports may just reveal that, if there ever was a time when "student athlete" was a legitimate term, that time has long since faded into history. Is there any hope for the future of college athletics? Stauss' talks are sponsored by the Department of Sport Management and Media, the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, and the Department of Athletics.
