Matthew Holtmeier, postdoctoral teaching fellow in Screen Studies, and Chelsea Wessels, lecturer in Screen Studies, co-authored an article in the anthology Teaching Transnational Cinema: Politics and Pedagogy.
Their piece, titled "Understanding Context, Resisting Hermeneutics: Ways of Seeing Transnational Relations," explores the use of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy for teaching transnational cinemas. In particular, they examine the ways that transnational films oscillate between the familiar and the unfamiliar, which situates transnational cinema as an ideal teaching tool for both empowering learners and challenging preconceived notions about the world.
