ACTING OUT NEW YORK is thrilled to announce that they are bringing 7 exciting new plays by female playwrights to the AONY STUDIO on SATURDAY, APRIL 30TH at 6:00PM. The event will feature performances by Ithaca College faculty members Cynthia Henderson (Associate Professor-Theatre Arts) and Jennifer Herzog (Theatre Arts).
The FREE reading will take place in conjunction with Little Black Dress INK’s ONSTAGE Project, a female playwright festival featuring readings of 41 new plays in 8 different cities. Over 60 artists have signed on to bring readings of the selected short plays to ITHACA, NY, Santa Barbara, CA; Minneapolis, MN; Sedona, AZ; Auburn, AL; Ames, IA; Waco, TX; and Los Angeles, CA before the winning plays move on to a final staged reading in Los Angeles and New York City, culminating in full productions both in Prescott, AZ and Lafayette, LA (with Acadiana Repertory Theatre).
Inspired by recent revelations in numbers on just how few female playwrights actually get produced, Little Black Dress INK strives to create more production opportunities for female playwrights while also strengthening the female playwright network.
The Curves Ahead festival is the fifth installment of the Female Playwrights ONSTAGE Project, created by playwright and producer, Tiffany Antone.
“Little Black Dress INK wants to bring new work by female playwrights to expanded audiences, and the ONSTAGE Project allows us to do that,” said Antone. “By partnering with artists in cities like ITHACA, we are able to bring these plays to more audiences than we would ever be able to do on our own.”
In addition to providing a fresh opportunity for audiences, the festival has employed a unique peer review process to select plays for the fest. Playwrights who submitted work to the festival also evaluated the plays; thus, 41 semi-finalists were selected from 200 submitted works by the participating playwrights themselves. This pool of semi-finalists will now be narrowed down to a selection of just 9 plays, which will be featured in a staged reading at Samuel French in LA and NYC before moving on to full production in both Prescott, AZ and Lafayette, LA this August.
The thing that’s most exciting about being a part of the festival is that we get to introduce new plays/new playwrights to our audiences here in Ithaca, and we get to do so with these deliciously short pieces.” Said Darcy Rose of AONY. “The audience gets exposed to a variety of different genres as a result.”
In addition to the unique structure of the festival, an added bonus is that the public can follow the process along at www.littleblackdressink.org where the playwrights, directors, and other participants will be blogging prior to the festival.
The Curves Ahead reading will feature local actors and directors, and take place at ACTING OUT NY IN CENTER ITHACA ON THE COMMONS For more information, visit www.LittleBlackDressINK.org. This event is FREE to the public.
