Submitted on behalf of the Commencement Committee.
As we prepare for our 121st Commencement on Sunday, May 22, 2016, we would like to provide you with some information regarding the academic procession. The procession will form at 8:30 a.m. outside in the academic quad. Please look for the signs indicating where each school should start lining up. The academic procession will begin promptly at 8:50 a.m. and the Commencement ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. All guests will be encouraged to be seated by 8:45 a.m. The procession will be in the order noted below:
Order of Procession
Trustees/platform party
Faculty and staff
School of Music with graduate students first
School of Humanities and Sciences with graduate students first
School of Communications with graduate students first
School of Business with graduate students first
School of Health Sciences and Human Performance with graduate students first
The Board of Trustees/Platform Party will assemble on the 1st floor of the Peggy R. Williams Center at 8:45 a.m. and will walk to the Academic Quad to begin the procession to the stadium.
Faculty and Staff who are processing will line up outside of Job Hall facing the fountains and form a double line in random order under the direction of the Faculty Marshals. The faculty and staff will process in front of the students up the walkway between the School of Music and the Hill Center. The faculty and staff will proceed to the “chute” which leads into the stadium, and then line up on both sides of the “chute” so that all of the graduates will pass between the faculty and staff as they enter the stadium. Once all of the students have passed through, the faculty and staff will then process into the stadium in front of the reviewing stand. Faculty and staff members should plan to provide their own umbrellas in the event of inclement weather.
Faculty and staff will be seated together in a section to the west of the graduating students on the field.
The Class of 2016 graduates will line up in the academic quad area extending from Textor Hall toward the Campus Center. Students from each school will form a double line in random order with graduate students in front. Each school will be led by its student Marshals. Signs on the quad will indicate the locations of the respective schools.
Severe Weather Plan
With regard to graduation, severe weather is defined as conditions that make holding an outdoor ceremony dangerous or impossible. In an effort to accommodate seating for as many family members and guests as possible, the College will always attempt to hold the Commencement ceremony outdoors, even if it is raining. In the case that severe weather is forecast for Sunday morning, the outdoor ceremony will be postponed until 1:00 p.m. Receptions and diploma cover distribution will take place after the ceremony at the publicized locations. In the event that severe weather is forecast for the entire day on Sunday, the Commencement ceremony will be moved into the Athletics and Events Center. Three severe weather tickets will be distributed to each graduate via the Campus Store when distribution is scheduled for camps, gowns and medallions.
Graduating students will not need severe weather tickets; your caps and gowns will serve as your tickets to enter the A&E Center. Family members and guests without tickets will be encouraged to watch the ceremony on local cable channel 16 from an off-campus location, or from any of the locations on campus listed under the “Cablecast/Webcast” section listed below.
In the event of severe weather, graduates should proceed directly to the A&E Center between 7:30 am and 9:30 am where you will be seated by school (there will be no student procession). Receptions and diploma cover distribution will be held as scheduled, unless otherwise announced.
In the event of severe weather, faculty should proceed to the A&E Center Hall of Champions by 8:30 am in order to line up for the faculty procession.
Any decision regarding changes to the Commencement schedule will be made as early as possible and will be announced on campus, through the Campus Center information desk at 607-274-3201, via Ithaca.edu, on radio station WICB FM 91.7, and via official Ithaca College social media outlets.
