Marella Feltrin-Morris (Modern Languages and Literatures) co-presented (with Alberto Anselmi, IUAV University of Venice) a paper entitled "Restoration and Translation, Restoration as Translation" at the Cross-disciplinary Approaches to Urban Space conference in Florence, Italy (June 27-28, 2016).
In their presentation, Feltrin-Morris and Anselmi pointed out that, while restoration and translation appear to have little in common from an etymological standpoint—one suggesting a return to a state of being firm or set down (re- + -staurare) and the other a movement or transformation—, they nevertheless share many aspects in terms of the types of "texts" they operate on, the methods they employ, the challenges they face, the debates that surround them, and the solutions they put forth. After highlighting the similarities between the theoretical approaches to restoration and translation, the paper focused on the types of interventions carried out by both, reflecting on whether some of the lessons learned in the practices of restoration and translation may be mutually beneficial.
Feltrin-Morris also gave a lecture on the 1958 Italian film Big Deal on Madonna Street at Convivio: A Conference of Authors, Academics, & Artists held in Postignano, Italy, on June 26, 2016.
In her lecture, Feltrin-Morris illustrated the characteristics of Commedia all'Italiana as a response to Neo-Realism, highlighting their shared aspects and comparing Big Deal on Madonna Street to Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves.
