It is with great sadness that I inform the Ithaca College community that one of our students passed away at Cayuga Medical Center early on the morning of Sunday, August 28. Shortly before 2 a.m. two individuals were stabbed during a large fight near the intersection of College Avenue and Campus Road. The second Ithaca College student who was stabbed in that incident was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a regional trauma center and released.
We are not identifying the students at this time, pending notification of their families.
The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Ithaca Police Department, with assistance from other law enforcement agencies. The perpetrator or perpetrators have not been identified. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who might have information on this incident is asked to contact the Ithaca Police Department at 607-272-3245, or on the tipline number at 607-697-0333.
We will update the campus community as more information becomes available. You can read a statement from Cornell Vice President Ryan Lombardi regarding this incident here.
The college is reaching out to those who might need counseling assistance. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. today, the lounge in the Circles Community Building will be open for students seeking immediate support. Counselors and professional staff will be present. A larger community gathering is being planned.
Students in immediate crisis should contact the Office of Public Safety at 607-274-3333. Faculty and staff can speak to a counselor through the Employee Assistance Program at 1-800-327-2255.
In the meantime, I hope you will hold these students—along with their families, friends, classmates, and professors—in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult and tragic time.
Tom Rochon
