Dr. Hongwei Guan, Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education presented two papers at the International Convention on Science, Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS), held from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4, 2016 in Santos / SP, Brazil under the theme “Saying Yes to Diversity in Sport”.
Dr. Guan chaired the symposium session “The diversity of culture and youth education in promoting global citizenship through Olympic sport development”, and presented a paper “Using Sport to Promote Cultural Diversity and Prepare Global Citizens”. He also made a poster presentation “Promote Cultural Awareness by Engaging Students in Sport and Performance Activities”, which is a paper he collaborated with several colleagues from China West Normal University and Ithaca College.
The ICSEMIS is a multi-disciplinary, professional conference a successor of the Pre-Olympic, Pre-Paralympic and Sport Scientific Congresses, as a joint effort by the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS). This was the 3rd edition of the event. The first ICSEMIS was held in Guangzhou, China in 2008, under the theme "Sport Sciences and Harmonious Society in the 21st Century ". The second was held in Glasgow, UK in 2012 just prior to the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, under the theme "Sport… Inspiring a Learning Legacy ".
Dr. Guan also made a keynote presentation at the 15th Annual Conference of the Society of Chinese Scholars on Exercise Physiology and Fitness (SCSEPF) held in July 21-22, 2016 at Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong, China. The main theme of the Conference is “Active Aging, Quality of Life and Physical Activity as Medicine: Where is the Science?” Dr. Guan’s presentation title is “Balance: Beyond Postural Control”.
