Two sections of a newly designated CA perspective course are open for enrollment this spring. Professor Majeed will offer two sections of ARTH 27000 Art and Architecture of Africa on MW at 5:25 (section 01) and 6:50 (section 02). It will address the Mind, Body Spirit theme of the ICC.
Course Description:
Introduces the art and architecture of Africa through case studies that place objects and monuments in their social context while relating them to broader art historical issues. Case studies explore the variety of cultural production on the continent through history, including reliquaries, figural sculpture, masks, textiles, terracottas, metal casting, photography, and architecture. Considers issues of authorship and performance, the role of photography in the formation of colonial and post-colonial identities, the inventions of masquerade, and the role of “tradition” in the production and reception of contemporary artists.
