Russian film has had a profound impact on world cinema: this is your chance to understand the cinematic tradition of this grand culture in a period of great historical turmoil. In History of Russian Film (LNGS 212/MASS 212) we will see how film and filmmakers supported the Soviet state, and ultimately subverted the state's messages, narrated the fall of the Soviet system, reinterpreted Soviet history, and shaped its audiences.
No knowledge of Russian is required. All films are subtitled; all readings are in English.
This course has no prerequisites and is open to first-year students.
