Fire Alarm Testing and Drills For Academic Buildings During Break

01/10/17

Contributed by Charlie Sherman

Ithaca College Environmental Health and Safety personnel will be conducting fire alarm testing followed by an evacuation drill in some academic building during break.

As mandated by the NYS Fire and Education Codes, EH&S staff will be conducting testing of fire alarm systems in some of the academic buildings during break. This testing requires us to activate every detector in the building to assure they are operational. We will notify buildings of the testing by posting notices on entry doors, hopefully the day before, and in most cases we can test the building in silent mode to avoid unwanted disruptions. Upon completion of the testing, we will test the entire buildings alarm, and conduct one of the three required fire drills at the same time. As is always the case, you are required to exit a building in a safe and expedited manner any time the fire alarm system is activated, and then gather at your building’s established meeting spot. We will try to conduct the drills during reasonable weather. If you are aware of a specific date or time that may be a conflict (large meeting etc.) please advise our office and we will make an attempt to avoid the time period. Requests or concerns may be directed to: csherman1@ithaca.edu If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask the EH&S staff conducting the testing. Working together we maintain fire code compliance while demonstrating a commitment of providing a safe environment for our students, staff and faculty. Thank you
