Distinguished Visiting Writer Yiyun Li Reads Tuesday, February 28

Distinguished Visiting Writer Yiyun Li, winner of the MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, will give a reading on Tuesday, February 28th at 7:30 PM in Clark Lounge.

The reading, followed by a Q&A and book-signing, is free and open to the public.

Yiyun Li grew up in Beijing and came to the United States in 1996. She is the author of the short story collections A Thousand Years of Good Prayers and Gold Boy, Emerald Girl and the novels The Vagrants and Kinder Than Solitude. Her many awards include the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, the PEN/Hemingway Award, the California Book Award, the Whiting Award, a Lannan Foundation Residency fellowship, and a MacArthur Foundation fellowship. She was selected by Granta as one of the 21 Best Young American Novelists under 35, and was named by The New Yorker as one of the top 20 writers under 40. She lives in Oakland, California, and teaches at University of California, Davis. Her first memoir, Dear Friend, From My Life I Write to You in Your Life, will be published this month.

Of her new book, Marilynne Robinson writes, "Yiyun Li has written a remarkable account of her literary life, begun in her youth in China with the books that first engaged her in the great conversations of literature. In her own emergence as an important and gifted writer in English she has brought a new voice to that great world. She has also been, in the deepest sense, sustained by it. Her new book is a meditation on the fact that literature itself lives and gives life."
