I am pleased to announce that two faculty members from the School of Humanities and Sciences have been selected for the 2017-18 London Sabbatical Program. I thank the members of the faculty review committee for the gift of their time over winter break and the sabbatical -eligible faculty who applied with such worthy proposals.
The Fall 2017 semester in London is awarded to Dr. Christopher Sinton, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences. Dr. Sinton proposes to build on a course he has taught on campus and will modify it to suit the London experience. The course, “Sustainability across the Globe,” will be submitted for ICC approval of a natural science perspective designation in the Quest for a Sustainable Future and World of Systems themes. Dr. Sinton will “include field excursions and a study of European waste and recycling policies” in the course. He will double the opportunity for Fall 2017 semester students to meet an ICC natural science requirement as the London Center recently received approval to offer “London, People and the Planet!” In addition to teaching one course at the Center, Dr. Sinton will work on completing both a manuscript and a proposal to the National Science Foundation; he will consult with research colleagues at the University of Cambridge and elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
The Spring 2018 semester awardee is Dr. Paul Wilson, Associate Professor in the Department of Art History. Dr. Wilson will teach a 200-level, ICC-designated art history course, “Postcolonial Art in London,” with the goal of helping students “to understand London as a center for global art through a series of readings, film screenings, lectures, fieldtrips, and written work.” Dr. Wilson plans to conduct research on Namibian artists who live in London and “examine how artists visualize and reimagine events from Namibian history in artworks made since 2000.”
The Office of International Programs and Extended Studies (OIPES) is pleased to offer the London Center as a sabbatical destination for Ithaca College faculty who, in turn, help us to build connections between Ithaca and London to improve the student experience. Dr. Thorunn Lonsdale, Director of the Ithaca College London Center, joins us in congratulating Dr. Paul Wilson and Dr. Christopher Sinton.
