This Thursday - Music in CNS!
12:15pm in the CNS lobby - Ithaca College Tabla Ensemble. A C. P. Snow event, bridging the Humanities and the Sciences.
The art of tabla as a performative example of bridging the humanities and sciences.
Hindustani or North Indian classical music is one of the most sophisticated styles of music. The artisty of tabla performance, which relies upon tala (cyclical rhythm) alongside raga (melody), will be presented by advanced ethnomusicology students from the Department of Anthropology. Central to the performance of rhythm in Indian classical music is the ability of the performer and audience to count or ‘keep time’. As students will be playing intricate compositions within a rhythmic cycle of 16 beats (called tin tal), all present will be asked to experience the beauty of tabla rhythms as a mathematical challenge!
