Athletic Training Major Attends Major Concussion Symposium

Jacob Powell (Athletic Training, Class of 2017) recently attended a prestigious multidisciplinary concussion summit at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill to get updated on the latest science regarding the evaluation, recognition, prevention and management of sport related concussions.

Funded in full by the Kent Scriber Athletic Training Fund, Senior Athletic Training major, Jacob Powell (Swampscott, MA) attended the 4th Annual Matthew Gfeller Sport Related Neurotrauma Symposium, conducted by the Matthew Gfeller Sport Related TBI Research Center and the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill over the March 3-4 weekend. Jake was exposed to the latest scientific information regarding the prevention, recognition and management of sport related neurotrauma and had the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the world's leading experts on the complex topic, including Dr. Robert Cantu (Boston University & Emerson Hospital, pictured, with Jake), Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz (UNC, Chapel Hill), Dr. Stefan Duma (Va Tech), Dr. Chris Giza (UCLA), Dr. John Leddy (University of Buffalo), Dr. Mike McCrea (Medical College of Wisconsin), and others.

Jake will present a summary of his experiences to the AT Education Program as part of his funded extra-academic experience from the Kent Scriber Fund. The Scriber fund was created to help fund extra curricular and academic initiatives, professional growth and education for students and faculty, and applied scholarship opportunities for the Athletic Training Education program, which is housed in the Department of Exercise & Sport Sciences. The KSF is funded through generous alumni donations, student fund raising efforts and professional/continuing educational offerings for practicing clinicians.
