Have shoulder pain? Especially with overhead activities?

A group of 6th year Doctorate of Physical Therapy students are conducting a research study regarding shoulder pain in overhead athletes.

 

These subjects will go through an evaluation and receive multiple sessions of free physical therapy at IC to address their shoulder pain/disfunction.

Requires a short shoulder examination, answering a questionnaire, consent to manual therapy, 5 clinic visits (30 minutes in length) and four weeks of a simple exercise program. The study requires 7.5 hours of total participation time.

Participants may choose not to answer any questions they are uncomfortable with and can withdraw from the study at any time.

Inclusionary Criteria: Participants included in this study will meet the following inclusion criteria: overhead athlete, 18-50 years old, complaints of shoulder pain with insidious onset, a presentation of glenohumeral internal rotation deficit and consent to spinal thrust manipulation, shoulder mobilizations, and therapeutic exercise. Furthermore they will have a positive test for 2 of the 3 following tests; Hawkins-Kennedy, Jobe Test, Neer Impingement test (Appendix F).

Exclusionary Criteria: Participants will be excluded from this study if they meet any of the following exclusion criteria: a history of shoulder or spine surgery, currently receiving treatment for shoulder pain, treatment of shoulder pain in the previous 3 months, fear of spinal manipulations, pregnancy, history of corticosteroid injections within the past 3 years, systemic illness, osteoporosis, or radiculopathy.
