Description: Dissent is a word that has a wide range of interpretations. Authorities want little to do with it while those who seek change consider it a mission in life. Topic: Mindfulness

Description: Deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy of Buddhism, mindfulness, or total focus on one's mind, actions, and present moment has received widespread attention in recent years for its positive results and potentials across a wide spectrum of fields from neurosciences and psychology, to athletic performance and chronic pain management, to leadership and creativity, among others.

Topic: Shoulders of Giants

Description: Taking off from “standing on the shoulders of giants” we will talk about mentors and influences and how they have affected our thoughts and actions. How do we know who our mentors are? How have they influenced our lives? What makes a mentor “giant”? Are the influences always visible?

General Course Description: How can we combine insights from disciplinary experts to address complex issues? Guest experts from a variety of disciplines will discuss how researchers and practitioners in each of their disciplines would address a common issue. Techniques are introduced to combine their insights and lead to deeper understanding and more powerful solutions. Pass/Fail. 1 credit. No prerequisites. LA.

* short courses on systems thinking, synthesizing expertise, creativity, and character

* active hands-on learning; no lectures

* lots of fun

* the courses will help you make connections among what you are studying in different courses inside and outside your majors

* this can make learning more lasting and more useful in meeting complex real-world challenges

* courses are one credit and are graded pass/fail

* starting in block 2 of Fall 2016 any three of the four mini-courses counts as a Humanities or Social Sciences perspective in any theme (prior to that they counted in the World of Systems or the Inquiry, Imagination and Innovation themes)
