Patricia Zimmermann, professor of screen studies and codirector of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, published “Black Soil: Chernozem and Tuzit in Ukraine” in Afterimage in February 2017.
The article is based on her Spring 2016 work in Kyiv and Lviv, Ukraine as a Film and New Media Envoy for the US State Department. It analyzes the range of independent documentary forms emerging in Ukraine during the Maidan Revolution of 2013-2014, the conflicts in the Donbass, and efforts for civil society building in the context of political change and complex histories.
