Paul Wilson, Associate Professor in Art History, has been awarded a year-long, Core U.S. Scholar Fulbright award to teach at the University of Namibia in Windhoek, Namibia and work on his research project, "Visualizing Namibian History in Contemporary Art.”
He will teach courses on contemporary art history and museums studies in the Visual and Performing Arts department. His research project will examine how artists visualize and reimagine events from Namibian history in artworks made since 2000 and analyze how these artworks accrue meaning and value through their domestic and international exhibition. These artworks address topics such as the German colonial period and the Herero-Nama genocide, Apartheid during South African rule and the protracted war of independence, and the removal of colonial-era monuments and construction of new ones since Namibian independence in 1990.
