Buzzsaw Magazine is working with IC alum and professional journalist Cole Louison to host a workshop this Saturday April 15th, 2017 on structuring excellent pieces of narrative journalism.
At the Buzzsaw's "What's the Story?" workshop ft. IC alum and professional journalist Cole Louison, we'll read, discuss, and enjoy a variety of great narrative work, and explore what makes these web and print and radio pieces so good, so urgent.
Why does a 50-year-old newspaper article about Ernest Hemingway's cabin feel like it was written yesterday? How does Sarah Vowell's tape bring tears to our eyes? Could a David Foster Wallace piece, printed on the spine of a literary journal, really hit home?
We'll also explore how stories like these are conceived, pitched, reported, written, edited, and finally published.

On Cole Louison:
At IC, Louison was a reporter for the Ithacan, a founder of Buzzsaw magazine, and an intern at the Los Angeles Times.
After graduating, Louison was a reporter for the Vineyard Gazette and an Island Correspondent for WGBH (NPR Boston), then worked at the New Yorker and McSweeney's literary journal. In 2007, he began reporting for the City section of the New York Times.
In 2009 he began blogging about books, music, and show business for GQ, and in 2012 began working for Random House as a researcher, assisting best-selling authors like Charles Duhigg and Senator Cory Booker. His first book, The Impossible History of Skateboarding, was the top-selling skateboard book on Amazon.
Louison is currently a correspondent for Red Bull Media and at work on his second book, about a year reporting on Martha's Vineyard.
