The 2017 CP Snow Lecture: Bridging the sciences and the humanities
Cathy O’Neil (http://mathbabe.org) is the author of the New York Times bestselling Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy. In her talk, Cathy will expose the mathematical models used by government and corporations that shape our future, both as individuals and as a society. These “weapons of math destruction” score teachers and students, sort résumés, grant (or deny) loans, evaluate workers, target voters, set parole, and monitor our health.
Cathy is a mathematician who started her career in academia, moved to Wall Street to be a hedge fund analyst, was active in the Occupy Movement, and is now a bestselling author. Her recent book - Weapons of Math Destruction - was nominated for the 2016 National Book Award for nonfiction, and is also one of the 10 books on the New Yorker National Book Award Longlist for nonfiction. She has been a regular contributor at Slate and Bloomberg.
