On May 25, 2017, Professor Vaughn presented a new model that bridges two major theories of motivation in psychology.

The need-support model proposes that when people are pursuing goals eagerly, they can inflate how well they think that things are going, and when people are pursuing goals vigilantly, they can deflate how well they think things are going. Additionally, it proposes that when people feel like things are going well, they can get motivated to capitalize on the opportunity that things will go right, and when they feel like things are not going well, they can get motivated to ensure that nothing goes wrong.
