Registration is currently open for a summer offering of the staff and faculty R.A.D. self-defense course for women, with only a few spaces remaining!  Registration must be completed by tomorrow, Thursday, July 27 to participate in this class.  The class will be conducted as four three-hour sessions on July 31, August 2, August 7, and August 9, and is open to any Ithaca College staff or faculty member who identifies as female.  This course is welcoming, positive, and accessible for every age group and level of physical ability or previous experience in self-defense, including first-timers!

Classes will be conducted from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on each date and snacks and water will be provided.  Participants must be able to attend all four class dates to receive certification and access to free refresher training for life.  Course registration is $15 to defray printing and materials costs.  However, we never want financial difficulty to be a barrier to participation.  If waiving the registration cost would help you participate, please contact RAD coordinators Andrew Kosinuk (akosinuk@ithaca.edu) or Crystal Young (cyoung@ithaca.edu) directly to finalize your registration.

As just one component of the College's broader S.H.A.R.E sexual assault prevention strategies, R.A.D. seeks to support all women on campus who feel they would be further empowered through training in physical defense.  R.A.D., or Rape Aggression Defense, places an emphasis on sexual violence prevention, but has broadly applicable self-defense lessons for general crime prevention and personal empowerment.

While the August course is limited to staff and faculty, additional student classes will be available in 2017.  Students can find course dates for a fall student class at the R.A.D. website (www.ithaca.edu/safety/rad) after the staff and faculty class is completed.

The requirement to make the specific R.A.D. copyrighted curriculum open to women only is a stipulation of the national R.A.D. office.  However, Ithaca College recognizes that sexual violence can impact anyone, and that any community member may be interested in opportunities for self-defense training.  Anyone on campus who does not identify as female and is interested in self-defense training options besides R.A.D. can contact the Office of Public Safety to discuss their needs.
