Submitted on behalf of Provost Petrosino:

In fall 2016, Provost Linda Petrosino convened an Experiential Learning Task Force to identify the scope of experiential learning on campus, barriers making experiential learning challenging, and potential solutions to those barriers. One of the recommendations of the Task Force was to create an experiential learning committee that could work collaboratively on issues of common interest to individuals and departments engaged in various types of experiential learning.

In support of that recommendation, the Provost invites nominations or self-nominations from interested faculty and staff for an Ad Hoc Experiential Learning Committee to be formed for the 2017-18 academic year. The charge of the committee will be to build on the work of a 2016 Experiential Learning Task Force by prioritizing obstacles to be addressed from a list of barriers to experiential learning identified by the Task Force and to work with relevant staff/offices across campus to propose and, where feasible, implement, solutions to those barriers. The group will provide an interim report to the Provost by the end of the fall semester and a final cumulative report by April 1st. The ad hoc group’s experience will inform decisions about structuring an ongoing group in the future.

Those interested in serving should have experience and interest in experiential learning (broadly defined to include service learning, undergraduate research, internships, field placements, and community engagement). The goal is to constitute a committee of 7-9 individuals that is broadly representative of the types of activities that constitute experiential learning. Nominations or self-nominations should be submitted to kemnett@ithaca.edu by August 31st.
