Based on Charles Dickens’ final novel, left unfinished at his death in 1870, The Mystery of Edwin Drood follows members of the Theatre Royale Music Company as they bring to life and attempt to complete Dickens’ clever whodunit. Audiences participate along the way and vote to determine the ending of the show.

“One of the most inventive, inspired, and rousing musicals ever devised,” according to theater critic Matt Windman, Drood won five 1986 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score. Directed by Gabriella Carr, a 2014 graduate of the Ithaca College Department of Theatre Arts, the show borrows stage elements from Victorian melodrama, Gilbert and Sullivan, and English music hall.

The cast and production team feature several IC faculty, alumni, and students. Annalise Smith, lecturer in the Department of Music Theory, History, and Composition, stars as Edwin Drood. Doug Mathews (’90) plays Reverend Crispsparkle. Carin Estley (Theatre Studies ’19) assists in directing. Nicole Cronin (Music Education ’19) leads the singers, including Jackie Scheiner (Music Education, Voice '19). Keehun Nam (Conduction MM ’18) conducts a full orchestra. Daniel Allen (Theatre Production Arts ’18) and Evan Hawkins ('15) designed the set.

The show’s musicians are all students or graduates of the School of Music: Nikhil Bartolomeo (clarinet, bass clarinet, flute), Cynthia Becker (bassoon), Vivian Becker (flute, clarinet), Emmanuel Berrido (synthesizer), Abrey Feliccia (bass), Reuben Foley (violin), Terri Landez (cello), Dante Marrocco (trombone), Katie McInerney (percussion), Stefanie Nicou (oboe, English horn, clarinet), Peter Nowak (violin), Nicoletta Pignatello (horn), Shaun Rimkunas (trumpet), Kristina Sharra (violin), and Danny Syvret (drums).

The Hangar Theatre (801 Taughannock Boulevard) is located two miles north of downtown Ithaca on Route 89 at the Treman Marina entrance to Cass Park. Unlimited free parking is available.
