A message from Student Body President Carlie McClinsey:

 Dear Fellow Students,

I hope that your first two weeks of classes were exciting and have motivated you to have a great semester. I personally love this time of year because of the beautiful weather and the numerous Ithaca festivals. With finals far in the distance, early September allows for more relaxation time, and for many students, more time to go out and explore South Hill.

Ithaca is a beautiful place, many would even say it’s “gorges.” But as students, we sometimes forget about the greater Ithaca community in which we live, and that we must be respectful of other Ithacans, their properties, and their families.

I met with some local Ithacans recently who described to me the messes they find on their front lawns some mornings and the loud noises from students that keep them up at night. They close their windows and doors, turn up the TV, and still cannot drown out the noise of loud college students. It’s heartbreaking to know how much we as IC students are disrupting local lives. These are people with young children, elderly parents, and jobs that require an early rise. I can’t imagine the frustration they must feel.

I know we’ve heard this spiel many times. I get it. But if this email can even get a few students to show more respect to this wonderful community, then maybe South Hill will be better place to live. Find a trash can instead of throwing garbage into a yard. Be courteous when using public transportation. Keep your voices down as you walk past family homes on your way to and from the Commons. I’m not asking you to stop going out, I’m just asking for us all to remember to treat our Ithaca neighbors as you would like them to treat you.

Ithaca is home to us and many others. Let’s show it the love that it’s given us.

Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe.

With Bomber Pride,
Carlie
