“Very Good for an American”: Essays on Edward MacDowell published by Pendragon Press (2017) includes a chapter by music professor Mark A. Radice.
The essay, “Parallels in the Careers of Edward A. MacDowell and Chou Wen-chung” highlights recurring issues and conflicts in the careers of the two composers—particularly during their years at Columbia University. Radice’s essay examines dialectics arising from cultural identity, cultural boundaries, racial stereotyping, expectations of audiences and critics, and more. The original version of the essay was presented as a lecture at the December 2010 MacDowell Festival and Symposium presented at Elizabethtown College under the direction of Prof. E. Douglass Bomberger, who also edited the Pendragon volume.
