Application for Binghamton Anti-Poverty & Anti-Racism Events (Application Deadline Extended to Friday, October 6th!)

The Center for Civic Engagement and the Honors Program invite Ithaca College students to participate in an exciting leadership experience connected with a growing movement to end systemic racism and poverty.

A community meeting in Binghamton, NY the evening of Tuesday, October 17th, will feature Rev. Dr. William Barber, II and Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, along with community leaders from New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey discussing the issues, history, and vision for the Poor People's Campaign. During the meeting, the findings of the Truth Commission on Poverty in New York State will also be released.

On Wednesday, October 18th, a day-long conference will bring together faith, labor, and community leaders from across the state to delve more deeply into the Truth Commission’s findings, learn more about economic and racial justice issues facing New York, and discuss plans for participating in the Poor People’s campaign and strengthening a movement in New York State.

The call for this Campaign has emerged from more than a decade of work by grassroots community and religious leaders, organizations and movements fighting to end systemic racism, poverty, militarism, environmental destruction & related injustices. It aims to build a broad and deep national movement – rooted in the leadership of the poor, marginalized and moral agents and reflecting the great moral teachings – to unite our country from the bottom up. This movement draws on the history, vision, and work of the 1967/68 Poor People’s Campaign.

Students are invited to apply below to be a part of this experience. We expect students to be inspired to return back to their own campus and build on the momentum to build regional student networks around these issues.

Transportation to Binghamton, meals, and the option for simple over-night accommodations will be provided for selected Ithaca College students.
