On behalf of the Office of Energy Management & Sustainability
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 2 · 7 PM, BUSINESS 104: Join alumn Alex Wilson ’77 in a reflection on his journey from Biology undergraduate to a forty-year career transforming the sustainable building and resiliency industry.
EXPECTING to embark on a career as an ecologist after receiving a B.S. in Biology from Ithaca College in 1977, Alex Wilson found himself on a different path. He began leading solar workshops in New Mexico in the late 1970’s, which opened the door to running the largest solar energy association in the Northeast in the early ‘80’s. In 1985, Alex founded his own company where he launched the nation’s first and still most respected green building publication. Most recently he has been utilizing these platforms to bring resilient design in to the mainstream. In this informal presentation, Alex will reflect on how his academic studies and experiences at IC uniquely prepared him for a 40-year mission transform the building industry by reducing environmental impact and improving occupant health.
ALEX WILSON is the President of the Resilient Design Institute and founder of BuildingGreen Inc., a consulting firm and leading publisher of green building information. Along with writing hundreds of articles for his own publication, Environmental Building News (now the BuildingGreen Report), he has written several books and hundreds of articles for other magazines throughout his career. Prior to launching his own company, Alex served as executive director of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) for five years. He also served on the national board of the U.S. Green Building Council from 2000 – 2005, and in 2008 received the organization’s Leadership Award for education; in 2010 he received the second annual Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainability.
