Are you a photographer and/or a creative writer? Want to see what can happen when you put the two in conversation? Enroll in Image and Text next semester! Taught by Nidaa Aboulhosn (Photography) and Katie Marks (Writing), Image and Text (CNPH 30418) is a special topics course which will explore the intersection of photography and creative writing. This course will emphasize the transformative aspect of the photograph and its complex system of inherent and interpreted meaning and what happens when it is put into conversation with creative writing. Through critiques, lectures, readings and discussions, we will explore historic and contemporary image-text work, philosophically investigating means of visual and written communication and interpretation. We will examine the literal and metaphoric meaning derived from individual images and from associations between images in a series and between images and essays, short stories, and poems.
Class will be held TR 1:10-2:50 PM and is 4 credits. Prerequisites: CNPH 14100 and CNPH 24200 or by permission of instructor. Please contact kmarks@ithaca.edu or naboulhosn@ithaca.edu with any questions.
