OSEMA is offering volunteer opportunities the week after finals in three locations across the United States. Summer Service trips are a part of the Alternative Breaks program, which offers students the opportunity to engage in week-long, service immersion experiences that offer personal growth and a chance to make positive impact in the lives of others.
Below are the site descriptions for 2018:
Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island, Maine. This trip will give students the opportunity to volunteer with the National Park Service. Students will assist the NPS with a variety of projects around the park, including camping site maintenance, trail stewardship, and other beautification projects. Students should expect to moderately strenuous work throughout the week. Students will have at least one day to enjoy and explore Mt. Desert Island. Students spend the end of the week enjoying time in Bar Harbor! This trip will involve some camping at an Acadia National Park campsite. All necessary camping equipment is provided by Ithaca College. Participant fee is $125 and is all inclusive. Participant-leaders pay a one-time $50 deposit.
Salamanca Youth Center in Salamanca, New York, is located on the Seneca Nation of Indians Allegany Territory in western New York. This organization provides after school recreational and educational programming for at-risk youth in Salamanca and the surrounding area. Volunteers help youth ages 5 - 18 with homework and participate in several of the after school programs offered by the center. This is a great fit for anyone interested in working with kids in an energetic environment. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about the Allegany Territory and the history of the Iroquois (haudenosaunee) in New York. Participant fee is $125 and is all inclusive. Participant-leaders pay a one-time $50 deposit.
YMCA Camp Cambell in Boulder Creek, California. Located an hour south of San Francisco, students will be working with the YMCA's Camp Campbell Outdoor Science School. Volunteers will serve as cabin supervisors and mentors during the week. At the end of the week, students will be given a day and half to explore the coast, Santa Cruz, and more. Participant fee is $100 and does NOT include airfare. Participant-leaders pay a one-time $50 deposit.
